Michael Phelps’ #PhelpsFace During Summer Olympics Inspires Toronto Man’s Tattoo

Courtesy of Livia Tsang(TORONTO) —  Michael Phelps’ fierce stare of determination ahead of one of his medal-winning races in Rio has inspired one Toronto man’s tattoo.

Ricky Fung, owner of Chronic Ink Tattoo Shop, in Canada’s capital city got the Olympic swimmer’s stare — which has gone viral on Twitter with many calling it the #PhelpsFace — tattooed on his right calf.

The Maryland swimmer made the face as he prepared for Monday’s race in the 200 meter butterfly semifinal. As South Africa’s Chad le Clos amped himself up by shadow boxing, Phelps created “the face.”

Fung, 35, who has approximately 25 other tattoos, told ABC News that he was inspired to get the swimmer’s face tattooed on him shortly after watching the moment on the internet and then researching the swimmer.

“I admire people who aspire to be great,” he added. “With the amount of determination and focus that he has, every day I want to look at my leg and wake up and channel all of this and do great things.”

Fung said the actual black-ink tattoo took about three to four to complete. It was done by his employee, Livia Tsang, who posted a now viral photo of the tattoo to Instagram.

The tattoo shop owner has received a variety of reactions to his new tattoo, varying from “yeah, that’s awesome” to “oh my God, why would you do that? How would that look in 20 years?” he said.

Fung reflected, “I think I’ll have much bigger concerns in 20 years. I’ll be 55 and, God, if I’m healthy, the last thing I’ll be thinking about is this.”

Now that the image of the tattoo has gone viral, Fung hopes it inspires other people to harness their determination like Phelps, who is set to retire after the 2016 Olympics.

“I don’t think people have enough of that in this world,” Fung said. “You don’t give yourself the time to focus on one thing and to me, I thought that was the greatest thing — that moment when you knew he was locked in.”

Five Things to Know About 4-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Ledecky

iStock/Thinkstock(RIO DE JANERO) —  The Olympian has already won three gold medals at the Summer Games (added to her one gold in London) and she’s broken 12 world records throughout her career.

Before she competes in the women’s 800-meter freestyle, here are five things to know about Ledecky:

1. She’s rooming with fellow gold-medalist Simone Manuel.

While in Rio, Ledecky’s Olympic Village roommate is none other than Simone Manuel, who tied for gold in the 100-meter freestyle. The proud roomie shared her excitement on Twitter:

AHHH!!! My roomie @simone_manuel just won a gold medal! I’m shaking. So proud of you. #CHAMP

 2. She was the youngest American at the London Games in 2012.

Ledecky was just 15 at the Summer Games four years ago, making her the youngest member of Team USA at the time. Regardless, she managed to take home a gold medal for the 800-meter freestyle.

3. Swimming is a family thing.

Chlorinated water runs in her veins.

Ledecky’s mother swam at the University of New Mexico and her older brother, Michael, was also a swimmer. In fact, Ledecky began swimming at age 6 to follow in her big bother’s footsteps.

 4. She’s off to college.

Though Ledecky deferred a year to train for the Olympics, the 19-year-old has committed to Stanford University. After this not-so-relaxing summer, she’ll be heading there in the fall.

5. If she takes the 800-meter freestyle gold, she will be the second swimmer ever to win gold in the 200-, 400- and 800-meter freestyle races at the same Games.

Only one has been able to do it before her. In the 1968 Olympics, Debbie Meyer managed to place first in all three events. Now that Ledecky has taken the gold in the only race she was not overwhelmingly favored to win (the 200-meter freestyle), it seems more likely than not that she will match Meyer’s trifecta.
